Benue State University Cancels Final Year Exams Over Cheap Questions

The Department of English at Benue State University has been forced to cancel a final year exam for the 2020/2021 academic year after a picture of the exam paper was posted online, causing a public backlash.

The exam, which was supposed to last three hours, had five questions in total, and students were expected to answer three of them. Students were asked to define a register and its significance, as well as other questions that internet users claimed were too simple for even a first-year student.

One critic, Moses Ochonu, a Professor of African Studies at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, United States, noted that the cheap questions were the reasons first-class graduates are now very common in Nigeria as against when schools tested students with standard questions.

He also slammed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose member is most likely the examiner behind the poor questions, and their determination to remain silent in scandalous times.

In response to the backlash, the Head of the Department of English issued a memo stating that the perpetrator of the heinous act would be appropriately punished.
