5 Self-Care Practices You Need To Start

By Angel Yaki

Everybody's rushing. Everybody's hustling. Everybody wants to make this money, including you and me. It's not a bad thing to be ambitious but where do we draw the line? When do we take a break? For the average Nigerian youth, there is no break whatsoever. You're expected to work nonstop until you make it. These expectations are placed on you by society and sometimes yourself (I'm talking to you "Rich before 23" gang).

Let me tell you something now. It is the living that works. It is the living that makes money. If you break down now, nothing will change, you won't enjoy the money. What am I driving at?

Take care of yourself!

You're human after all, you need to be taken care of physically, mentally, emotionally, etc. You need the energy to hustle. Self-care isn't just a fancy word that people throw around. Self-care isn't only for the rich. Self-care doesn't have to be expensive. As a matter of fact, there are so many low/no-cost self-care activities you can participate in for your body and mind.

Here are five self-care tips to make you feel refreshed:

1. Start a gratitude journal: It is so easy to find bad news in this world we live in. We see and hear it everywhere. Starting a gratitude journal allows us to reflect on the good things that happened during the day, no matter how small. The things we are grateful for. In times of despair, we can always look back and know that it's really not that bad.
2. A complete daily journal; Pouring out our thoughts and emotions often clears our minds of all that clutter. We can express ourselves thoroughly and feel so much better afterward.
3. Engage in activities you love: Once a week or more, try to engage in something you love. Does dancing make you happy? Then play music and dance in the evenings. Do you love to crochet? Please do it!
4. Sleep: Nobody's going to get an award for having the most sleepless nights. You're destroying your brain, sleeping for only three hours at night. Try to sleep for at least 7-8 hours and when you wake, you'll be refreshed and full of ideas and solutions.
5. Eat right: I know that you're constantly tempted to eat junk food and most times you succumb. As the popular saying goes, "You are what you eat." If you eat healthily, you'll be healthy. Eat more vegetables and generally, more actual food. Gala and Coke is not a meal. You're starving your body of the nutrients it needs which in turn affects your ability to think clearly and come up with ideas.

As my fellow Nigerians would say, "Body no be firewood." Take care of your body and it will in turn cooperate with you.
