NANS Protests In Calabar Over ASUU Strike

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has protested over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unresolved negotiations with the Federal Government.

The students, who turned out in their numbers, caused gridlock along Murtala Mohammed Highway Calabar, near the Calabar Federal Secretariat gate, were asked by the police to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner or risk the anger of the law.

Speaking on behalf of the students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Anthony Afufu, threatened to take the protest to the airport next time if something is not urgently done by the Federal Government to salvage the situation.

“We contributed money to carry out this protest, nobody sponsored us. We called on the Federal Government to give a listening ear to ASUU. Imagine the Accountant General of the nation, just one man would steal billions yet school gates are shut down.

“For how long are we going to stay at home? We cannot continue to stay at home just because the government claimed not to have money to settle the university lecturers.

“Enough of this, for how long will we continue to stay at home.” Afulu lamented.
